San Telmo is Buenos Aires’ historic district, and is brimming with culture, both contemporary and from days of old. This was the first-populated area of Buenos Aires, and the architecture and winding streets speak softly of that time. Today, it remains full of tango academies and art galleries, and its antique markets are unparalleled. Shops are tucked into everycorner, and Plaza Dorrego is a fine place for relaxing with a cold beverage and one of the fine dishes offered by the surrounding restaurants.
San Telmo’s cobblestone streets offer hours of exploration, but the neighborhood really bursts with energy on Sundays, when the plaza hosts an antique market from 10:00 – 17:00, and hundreds of people flock to browse. Local artisansand food vendors line Defensa street, San Telmo’s main artery, offering a wide variety of carefully made, unique goods. From mate gourds to jewelry to delicious, international goodies, the market is not to be missed.
The rest of Buenos Aires is easily accessible; with a short 20-minute stroll, you will find yourself in the city center, and the northern neighborhoods ofPalermo and Belgrano are just a short ride away on any of the city’s public transportation offerings.
